Start every project ready to work
Turn a project your team knows well into a template, and every new project can start from a copy of it: the same board, backlog, labels, settings and starting work, in one step.
The problem
Teams that run many similar projects, such as client engagements, onboarding programs or product releases, set up the same columns, buckets, labels and first cards every time. Doing it by hand is slow, and the projects slowly drift apart. With templates, you set it up once and every new project starts from the same place.
How Flying Donut helps
- Any project becomes a template with the “Use as template” switch in its Admin settings
- A template is an ordinary project: keep improving it with the tools you already know
- A Template badge marks templates in the project header, the Projects list and the sidebar
- Filter the Projects list to show only templates
- Templates stay within your organization, and people see only the templates they can open
- Choose “Start from” in the new project dialog and pick a template, with its type, card and sprint counts
- The new project is ready at once and fills with work in the background, with progress on screen
- Changes to a template never reach projects already created from it, and the other way round
- Available on every plan, with no extra cost: a new project counts like any other
- Create projects from a template through the API, too
What a new project gets
The new project starts with the template's project type and settings, including estimates, time tracking and working days, its board columns with their WIP limits, its backlog buckets and its labels. It then gets copies of the template's cards and tasks in the same buckets, sprints and columns, in the same order, with their descriptions, estimates, labels and attachments.
- Planned sprints arrive as To Do: the first starts on the day you create the project, and the others keep their length and spacing
- Card due dates move with the sprints, so a card due three days into the first sprint is still due three days in
- You are the only member, and nothing is assigned yet, so nobody gets notified until you invite the team
- Comments, history, time entries and finished sprints stay in the template
- The project's activity records which template it came from
Templates keep their sprints planned
A template's sprints can be planned, edited and filled with cards, but not started or completed, so every project created from it gets the same sprints. Start and complete them in the projects you create. Pair templates with holiday-aware sprint planning: a template's holiday countries and working days carry over to every new project.
Set up your best project once
Create a project, shape it the way your team works, and turn it into a template for every project after it.
